I often hear, "How much should I sell my DVDs for?" This is a very common question, and I can provide you with the answer.
New sellers often times think that they will make $5 off of every DVD that they sell. That is not the truth by any means. Even though DVDs are the hottest item that is available on the internet, this creates a lot of competition for a seller.
Volume is the key in this online business. The realistic profit that you will see from of a DVD is from $1-$3. This sound like nothing, but imagine selling about 20,000 DVDs a month like ebay's top sellers.
When selling DVDs to make profit you have got to move volume. Buy DVDs wholesale and get the volume that you need. In turn sell your DVDs with a profit margin between $1-$3. I know this doesn't sound like much money but imagine selling ten to twenty thousand DVDs a month at $1 to $3 a pop.
What I try and do is sell my DVDs for just a couple of dollars over what I paid for them. For example, if I pay $6 for a DVD I will try and sell it for $8. I then make the rest of my profit from the shipping.
For my shipping I charge a rate of $3.99. Then I charge $2 for each additional DVD that is purchased. The Post Office charges about $1.29 to ship a DVD by airmail and I make about $2.70 just off of shipping.
I know you are wondering if this tactic is ethical, and as a matter of fact it is. Ebay is aware that sellers charge extra for shipping and they are fine with this tactic.
I never mislead my buyers. I always list the Shipping and Handling in full size text right on the auction page. All of my buyers know what they are going to pay before purchasing any of my items. I've also had a conversation with my Ebay rep about this. It is a practice Ebay knows exists and has no problem with.
So at the end of the day, if I have a title that turns out to be a bad seller, I can list it at exactly what I paid for it and still make money on the shipping and handling.
